FOR FOREST COMMUNITIES

logo

The Voluntary Carbon Market and other private sector sources for conservation finance is an opportunity for forest communities to:

access climate finance on your own terms

work with private sector as partners, not as saviors

use conservation to fund development goals

fund development at a level that is transformative and
multi-generational

It is possible to balance the urgency of climate action with respect for forest community self-determination.

Why partner with us?

Wildlife Works was founded in 1997 to change the model of conservation from a colonial-era fortress model where people are seen as apart from nature, to a community-centered model where people are integrated as part of nature.

We believe that in order for conservation projects to succeed, local communities must lead in their design and implementation. Research consistently shows that forest ecosystems inhabited and managed by IP and LCs have better-preserved biodiversity, water, and other natural resources.

Our project development and management process centers local communities’ participatory project design, upholds their rights, respects and prioritizes their culture and finances their self-determined development goals.

ROBUST FPIC PROCESS

Wildlife Works considers Free and Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) to be a continuous process, and it is critical to each phase of our projects.
Our FPIC process begins as deep listening sessions before any contracts are discussed or signed. It includes conducting extensive community outreach to community members with cultural sensitivity and respect for their governance structure.

FAIR AND TRANSPARENT
REVENUE SHARING

We prioritize financial transparency and develop fair and equitable revenue share models that work for all stakeholders, while maximizing the share that goes directly to self-directed community funds.

SELF-DETERMINED
PROJECT GOALS

Our community partners determine their own development goals through extensive theory-of-change workshops conducted side-by-side with the community.

FLUID CONSENT

We have a transparent internal grievance and recourse process and have regular listening sessions throughout the lifetime of the project.

PRINCIPLES SET BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLS AND LOCAL COMMUNITY

We aim to ensure all of our projects comply with all principles set for by Peoples Forests Partnership.
