An Elephant Rescue from an Unexpected Place

On 13th March 2023, our ranger team in Kenya received a call about a baby elephant that strayed from its herd and fell into a water chamber in the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ project area. In times of extreme drought, elephant herds can search out water sources in increasingly dangerous places. The Miasenyi Assistant Chief, Mr. Mohammed Liambo, reported that the calf had fallen into a water chamber of the Coast Water Line in Miasenyi and needed our help.

We immediately contacted Kenya Wildlife Service to advise them of the situation and dispatched our ranger patrol team to the site. Thanks to combined efforts from the Kenya Wildlife Service and our Ranger team, the calf was removed from the well after a few hours, and a positive health check was conducted. The team searched the area for the calf’s herd, but unfortunately to no avail.

Thankfully, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust under Kaluku operations were able to airlift the calf to their stockades. The baby elephant is now faring well and has been absorbed into the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphan program. We would like to thank every team member that was involved in this rescue mission.
